It has been fun literally every time I played it, with a wide variety of crowds. And yet I love playing Exploding Kittens. So there should really be no room in my collection for any game that has to do with kittens or unicorns. Hanamikoji and Arboretum-two games with outstanding art AND outstanding rules-are in my Top 10 games of all time. I like to think I am a respectable gamer. They are largely art projects with some rules tacked on to make them into an activity. Advantage: Exploding Kittens.įun: Neither game really has any right to be fun. The longer Exploding Kittens goes, the greater the tension as the deck becomes more and more dense with cat-bombs. But the winner here comes down to this: Unstable Unicorns can run a bit long, and when it does, it drags out to a slow and painful death.

Both games have a slew of expansions that add a little more mayhem and even a little more meat. Intangibles: Both games have a loyal fan base and no shortage of critics. Strategy: Unstable Unicorns has the faintest hints of set collection and even-gasp-engine-building! In Exploding Kittens you try not to draw a certain card. So you can simply draw without playing a card, or you could play a dozen different cards. Exploding Kittens has one of my favorite rules in any game: on your turn, you can play any number of cards before drawing. In Unstable Unicorns, you draw a card and then play one. Tactics: In Exploding Kittens, you play cards and then draw one. I think the winner comes down to which style of art you like better, and for me that was the cats. The cards are good quality, and they give you something funny to look at or read while you're waiting for your turn. And frankly, I was quite impressed by both of them.

Look: We're starting off with the prize fight, because the art is supposed to be the draw of both of these cards-only games. For now, we have to settle for two of the most infamous Kickstarter games in history. Let's get right to it and review the two most epic board games in all of existence these, gulp, games?
